Tutankhamun was the last king of the 18th Dynasty of the New Egyptian Empire (14th century BC). Son of Akhnaton, he married his half-sister Anjesenamon, ascending the throne at the age of nine. During his brief reign (he died at the age of 18) he reinstated the worship of Amun and the gods of the Egyptian pantheon, which had been forbidden during the reign of his predecessor.
His tomb was discovered in 1922 by the English archaeologist Howard Carter, in a campaign financed by Lord Carnarvon. The discovery of the almost intact hypogeum, with over 5,000 grave goods, sparked worldwide interest in the find, unleashing a wave of Egyptomania. Today Tutankhamun remains one of the most famous and iconic Egyptian pharaohs.
